Red and White Mtn lies atop the Sierra Crest a short distance southeast of its higher
neighbor, Red Slate Mtn. Composed of volcanic rock as are most of the peaks in this area,
the summit is actually black, not red and white.
Starting from the McGee Creek TH, hike up the trail past Big McGee Lake. At the outlet to
little McGee Lake, leave the trail, crossing the outlet, and head up the class 2 slopes to
the southwest. Once at the Sierra Crest, head southeast along the ridge, bypassing an
intermediate highpoint on the right side. Then hike the short distance up the Northeast Ridge
of Red and White to the summit. This route purported has less loose rock than any other route
to the summit, and makes for a fairly good climb.
6a start from the McGee Creek TH.
