Bear Mountain (4,771 ft.)

"Approximately five hundred geographic features in California bear the name of its largest and most notable native animal, either the black bear (which is sometimes 'cinnamon,' Ursus americanus) or the grizzly (Ursus arctos), which in some parts of the state was a major competitor with humans for food resources. Some of the Bear names may be translations from Spanish Oso. There are numerous Bear Rivers, Bear Mountains, Bear Canyons, Bear Valleys, Bear Creeks, plus an assortment of Bear Lakes, Meadows, Flats, Basins, Buttes, Gulches, and Sloughs. Added to these are a Bear Dome [Fresno Co.], Bear Haven Creek [Mendocino Co.], some Bear Wallow Creeks [Kern, Mendocino, Los Angeles Cos.], and a number of Beartrap Creeks and Beartrap Canyons."
