Buriburi Ridge (San Mateo Co.)
"From a Costanoan name, perhaps related to Rumsen purris 'needle' (Harrington;
Callaghan). The Register of Mission Dolores lists Urebure as one onf the rancherias
under its jurisdiction soon after its founding. In a letter of July 24, 1798, the new
Rancho de Real Hacienda in el parage nombrado ('teh named place') Buriburi is
mentioned (SP Mis. and C. 1:74). In Nov. 1826 Beechey mentions a farm called Burri
Burri, with a small cotage, about 12 miles from San Francisco. On his map (1827-28)
a place called Bourri is shown near what is now San Bruno. Duflot de Mofras's plan
has Buri in the same location. The name Buri Buri was applied to a provisional land
grant dated Dec. 11, 1827. Later the entire region between San Bruno Mountain and
San Mateo became known as Buri Buri. The name of Burra Burra Peak [Santa Clara
Co.] may come from the same stem."
