Elephants Back (9,585 ft.)

Named by Goddard in 1855

"A rather fanciful descriptive name for a long, ridge-like mountain. (See photo and sketch in SCB 44, no. 7, Oct. 1959: 60.) George H. Goddard (Report, 1855) called it 'the Elephant' in his list of places along the route. A map of Alpine County, made about 1870, has it as 'Elephant Mountain.' The Wheeler Survey atlas sheet 56B, 1876-77, calls 'Elephant's Back.'"
