Mt. Goethe (13,264 ft.)

Named by Sierra Club in 1949

Also Glacier, Lake, Cirque

"Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1932), greatest of German poets. In 1949, the 200th anniversary of Goethe's birth, Erwin G. Gudde suggested the name for the hitherto unnamed highest peak of the Glacier Divide, and for the glacier on its north side. David Brower also suggested applying the name to the lake (11,531-11,528) and the cirque. All the names were approved by the BGN that same year. 'Goethe Cirque' was omitted from the Mt. Goddard 15' map because of lack of space."
