Iron Mountain (2,696 ft.)

"These names came from red stained soil or water. They are fairly common in the county. Iron Mountain is three miles east of Poway, elevation 2,696 feet. The mountain takes its name from an old iron mine on the south side of the peak (Schad 81). There are Iron Springs ten miles north of Descanto and three miles north of Jacumba. There's also an Iron Spring and Iron Canyon on Palomar Mountain. Edward H. Davis of Mesa Grande once owned the spring, and so it is also known as Davis Spring. (Davidson Place Names File; Durham 34)."

- Leland Fetzer, San Diego County Place Names A to Z

"The word iron occurs in the names of about thirty Mountains, probably all applied because of the presence or supposed presence of iron deposits."
- Erwin Gudde, California Place Names
