Mammoth Rock (9,153 ft.)

Also Lakes, Crest, Pass, Creek, Rock

"In June 1877 four men located mineral deposits at an altitude of 11,000 feet. A mining district was formed, and the Mammoth Mining Company began work in 1878. All other 'Mammoth' names derive from the name of the principal mine. (See SCB 13, no. 1, Feb. 1928: 48-49.) The town had a post office from 1879 to 1881, and again from 1896 to 1898.

Mammoth Creek was called 'South Branch of Owens River' on Von Schmidt's plat of 1857. Mammoth Rock was called 'Mammoth Mountain' on the 1879 GLO plat."
