Mt. Powell (13,364 ft.) | Named by R. B. Marshall in 1911 |
The first ascent was by Walter L. Huber and James Rennie on August 1, 1925. 'The very summit is an overhanging rock of enormous size. A careless step might result in a drop to the glacier ice far below under the north face.' (SCB 12, no. 3, 1926: 250-51.)
On the 15-minute quad, the peak is the one to the left of the name.
The glacier, north of the peak, is named only on the 7.5-minute quad."
- Peter Browning, Place Names of the Sierra Nevada
There are three summits on this peak, each which have at various times been referred to as Mt. Powell. Informally, the three have been called "Point John," "Point Wesley," and "Point Powell." To this day the USGS has Point John (the highest of the three) as Mount Powell, while the Sierra Club's SPS has Point Powell (the more aesthetic and challenging) as Mount Powell.
