Named by Whitney Survey in 1865

"The Whitney Survey named the peak in 1865 for Rossiter W. Raymond, a US mineral examiner and commissioner of mining statistics in the Treasury Department. (Maude; Gudd, Gold, 417.) He also surveyed and wrote reports on the mines in Alpine County. (Alpine Heritage, 29.) Theron Reed's map of the Silver Mountain Mining District, 1864, shows 'Raymond Dist.' and 'Raymond,' settlement. The lake, meadows, and two creeks were first named on the 15-minute quad, 1956."
