Red Peak (11,699 ft.)

Named by Wheeler Survey in 1878

Also Creek, Red Peak Fork, Red Devil Lake

"The peak probably was named by the Wheeler Survey; it is on the atlas sheet 56D, 1878-79. The other names derive from the peak. All of them were first named on the 15-minute quad, 1953."
- Peter Browning, Place Names of the Sierra Nevada

"Next to 'black', red is the most common adjective of color used in place names. The maps of the state have more than 550 names that include this adjective, and many more are used locally. Usually the word is found to describe hills, peaks, cliffs, and points."
- Erwin Gudde, California Place Names
