This was going to be another short overnight trip to the Sierra foothills, this
time in Placer County. Unfortunately, I only managed the warm-up summits before
I had to abort. I'd gone in to the Raley's in Auburn to get a few supplies and
when I came out I noticed fluid leaking under the Jeep. Upon inspection, it
turned out to be radiator coolant and the source seemed to be the water pump.
I loosened the radiator cap to relieve the pressure (which reduced the leaking
significantly), bought some coolant at O'Reilly's in town just in case, and
headed for home.
Mooney Ridge
Mooney Ridge overlooks Folsom Lake. Sierra Dr runs across the top of it
with suburban homes on either side. If you live on the south side of the street
you have swell views overlooking the lake. If you live on north side, well,
you can look at the better viewhomes across Sierra Dr.
Boulder Ridge
This one is located about a mile north pf Penryn, one of several small
communities between Roseville and Auburn. The easiest access is from the west
at the end fo Clark Tunnel Rd where there's a cul-de-sac. The summit and
surrounding area is located on private ranchland. The gate at the end of the
road has a gap that one can fit through. It's a 1/3mi hike on a dirt
road to the very flat summit area. There is a tall telecom tower
nearby. The LoJ point is close to a boundary fence SE of the tower.
Duncan Hill
The summit is occupied by a rural home near the end of Stonehouse Ct,
just west of Auburn.
Robie Point
This is on BLM lands part of the Auburn State Recreation Area, overlooking the
North Fork American River. It's a narrow, windy drive through Auburn to reach
the end of Robie Dr where there is a trailhead with access to various
trails. Robie Point is only a few hundred feet from the parking area in
an oak woodland.
